Abstract

Learning styles (innate learner preferences for content delivered via instructional methods that are visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc.) seem ubiquitous in education. In this webinar, we will debunk the myth of learning styles, discussing the available research and data.

The notion of learning styles, sometimes known as the meshing hypothesis (see: https://www.tcsedtech.com/blog/avoid-...), seems to universally permeate education - whether k-12, higher ed, or corporate training & development. The concept of learning styles is that if a learner’s innate preference favors a visual approach, then the teacher should work to present the material in a visual manner and eschew other tactics, such as lecturing or lab work. This teacher might look for a relevant video or utilize visual aids. Whatever the innate learning preference, the teacher will work to accommodate the student.

Learning styles are commonly cited in blog posts and literature on teaching and learning. Over the years, people have suggested dozens of different learning styles. However, many of the empirical studies that have sought to establish the validity of the meshing hypothesis either cannot confirm the validity, or conclude that it is not a valid educational construct. Many researchers and industry leaders are now touting the meshing hypothesis as a spurious educational fallacy. In this webinar, we will review the data, discuss the implications of learning styles, and examine empirically-supported alternatives to the meshing hypothesis.

This webinar reviews student engagement and the SAMR model, and provides several examples where the model is applied to technology in the classroom.

Technology integration needn’t be high stakes or expensive to be effective. Technology integration can be implemented on a small scale using a relatively simple framework and tool. The SAMR model, developed by educator Ruben Puentedura, is such a tool that respects content and context, co-exists with and reinforces Bloom’s Taxonomy, and facilitates technology integrations that are effective and replicable.

Have you ever used a Google search to pull an image for a presentation or to add in your course? Did you know that you may be infringing on copyright law by doing so? This webinar will review basic copyright law pertaining to images and provide useful image resources. 

Description: 
Images are a wonderful way to add interest to a course in a LMS or in a slide deck for a conference or a classroom lecture. However, even in an educational setting, copyright law still applies. There is some wiggle room for educators and students, but we still need to be aware of what images we can use and in what context. This subject has become of increased interest and value as more and more creative content is available through the Internet. 

We will review the very basics of copyright law as it pertains to images, using images in educational and professional settings, and what qualifies as fair use. Knowing these guidelines will be helpful in selecting what images to use in the future. This will help ensure you don’t unknowingly use something you aren’t supposed to. 

In this webinar, we will review some great places you can locate images with zero copyright or that have creative commons licenses. We will also look at what to do if you want to use something that doesn’t have an open or creative commons license. Additionally, we will look at what a proper image citation looks like.

Let's begin with a Canvas basic. Canvas uses the same Rich Text Editor everywhere: announcement pages, discussions, assignments, content pages, quizzes, etc. This Rich Content Editor allows you to format text by changing the size, color, indentation, create bulleted lists, insert hyperlinks or images, and so on. When you edit using the Rich Content Editor, you see exactly how it will turn out when you publish it. (for more info, see: http://bit.ly/2ycdvmp). 

However, when you switch to HTML view in Canvas, you are able to embed content. Embedding is using HTML code to allow you to place an online element right onto your Canvas page. If you have embed code from VoiceThread, ThingLink, Padlet, Pinterest, or any number of other online resources, then you can place those right in Canvas. Below are some examples of embedded content in Canvas:

You do not need to know how to code and you do not need to be a programmer to be proficient at embedding content. Embedding content does involve working with HTML code, but all you need to know is what to copy and how to paste it. And then you're set up and you'll find that it is easier than you could have imagined to add interactivity to your courses! Once you learn the basics you'll find that it's very simple.

Bloom’s Taxonomy is a teaching strategy that attempts to encourage students to do more than just memorize information. Technology integration can help instructors push students to higher levels of thinking and learning. 

Description: 
Bloom’s Taxonomy offers an instructional tool that shows instructors how to push students to higher processing and creative levels. At the bottom of the framework, the Taxonomy describes basic rote memorization – the lowest level of learning. The second and third levels ask students to understand, explain, and apply concepts and ideas. Continuing up the framework, the fourth and fifth levels ask students to be able to analyze, draw connections, and evaluate information. Finally, the highest level of the framework involves creating new material from the information they’ve learned. 

Technology integration can help remote instructors push students from simple memorization to evaluating, analyzing, and creating new resources. Multimedia resources used by the professor can help deliver information to students at the bottom of the framework, while technology integration also provides students resources to collaboratively communicate with remote peers and instructors at the higher levels of the framework, as well as many means of expression to create their own resources and designs.

PowerPoint has become an indispensable platform within higher education and the work force, as it is easy to use without requiring extensive experience. However, few people utilize PowerPoint to its full capacity. Join us as we explore ways to take your PowerPoint skills to the next level. 

Description: 
In the early days of presentations, speakers often spoke from notes, often referring to handwritten script on index cards. Eventually technology allowed for a more immersive and engaging experience as presenters began utilizing transparency overhead sheets and slides (who recalls the slide carousels?). These approaches were not ideal, as the machines were noisy and hot, and the bulbs tended to burn out rather easily. Sometimes the transparencies would have text that rubbed off or leave flecks of burnt plastic on the slide. 

PowerPoint came in to save the day, and we haven’t looked back since. The slide decks are digital and (can be) visually appealing, and the content can be easily disseminated to students and colleagues. The advantages to using PowerPoint slides are numerous, but there is still room for growth regarding how we utilize the platform. 

In this webinar, we will review common mistakes that people make with PowerPoint as well as examples of good practices. We will do a deep dive into the platform as we: 

• Create a custom template 
• Explore options for modifying, combining, and organizing graphics and shapes

Video interactions in education are often flaunted as an innovative and effective way to disseminate information in an online educational platform. Videos can be effective for blended, fully online, and traditional courses. However, instructional and informational videos can also be difficult or intimidating to create, impersonal, and faculty and students of mixed levels of technological acumen often converge in the classroom having strong preferences for certain devices and operating systems. 

Despite the challenges, when created effectively, video can add depth and dimension to online courses, effectively enhance traditional and blended courses, and can augment the overall learning and teaching experience. For many higher education institutions, video announcements have become a baseline expectation of their faculty. Video has been found to be an effective way to engage students as they interact with professors, other students, and the subject matter content. 

In this webinar we will discuss unique tools and approaches that can meet peoples’ expectations and engage students. This workshop will benefit professors who desire to create engaging content and develop course modules that utilize effective multimedia tools. Social media networks like Facebook and Twitter are common platforms of communication. Both traditional and non-traditional students are using these social media websites to keep track of friends and family, industry updates, political news, etc., so why not use them in education? Within education there is often a disconnect between our educational platforms and these popular social media sites. This webinar will discuss innovative ways to incorporate social media into the online classroom.

Canvas Commons users can also share their materials with other professors - either within their own department, our own institution, or with the entire Canvas community. In education, PowerPoint is widely used as a platform for presentations. PowerPoint presentations display slides of content in a linear format while limiting interaction from the audience. Office Mix is a PowerPoint plugin that enhances PowerPoint presentations in order to create interactive, multimedia online content. You can create and export videos, insert audio and record slides, as well as incorporate quizzes to engage the learner. 

Microsoft Sway is a digital storytelling app which can help professors create professional lessons with interactive elements while leveraging multimedia in order to engage students. The Sway is easy to build and it allows you to incorporate photos, videos, charts, audio, and even tweets in a sort of ebook format that embeds nicely into Canvas and renders well on all devices. 

In this webinar we will review Office Mix and Microsoft Sway and how they can be used to enhance the classroom and engage students. These products are simple to learn but add depth and intrigue to the classroom content.

PowerPoint has become an indispensable platform within higher education and the work force, as it is easy to use without requiring extensive experience. However, few people utilize PowerPoint to its full capacity. Join us as we explore ways to take your PowerPoint skills to the next level. 

Description: 
In the early days of presentations, speakers often spoke from notes, often referring to handwritten script on index cards. Eventually technology allowed for a more immersive and engaging experience as presenters began utilizing transparency overhead sheets and slides (who recalls the slide carousels?). These approaches were not ideal, as the machines were noisy and hot, and the bulbs tended to burn out rather easily. Sometimes the transparencies would have text that rubbed off or leave flecks of burnt plastic on the slide. 

PowerPoint came in to save the day, and we haven’t looked back since. The slide decks are digital and (can be) visually appealing, and the content can be easily disseminated to students and colleagues. The advantages to using PowerPoint slides are numerous, but there is still room for growth regarding how we utilize the platform. 

In this webinar, we will review common mistakes that people make with PowerPoint as well as examples of good practices. We will do a deep dive into the platform as we: 

• Create a custom template 
• Explore options for modifying, combining, and organizing graphics and shapes 
• Create custom graphics 
• Incorporate interactivity to your presentation

Abstract: 
When creating a content page within Canvas, the default view is the rich text editor. Have you ever been curious about what the HTML Editor is and how to use it? Find out at this webinar (spoiler alert, it's really not as challenging as it might seem). 

Description: 
Every webpage on the internet is written in a computer language called HTML (hypertext markup language). This is a set of symbols and codes – a language – that computers use to speak to each other. This language is then translated in our web browsers in order to display the content to us. 

It is possible to design a fully functional course in Canvas without every knowing any HTML. But the rich text editor does have some limitations, and learning the basics of how to code in HTML will open up a world of functionality. Additionally, knowing HTML will better ensure that your content shows up correctly and will help you identify and troubleshoot problems. 

There are times when it might be faster to make a change in the HTML editor, or when you need greater control of the formatting. Copying and pasting content from MS Word or other processing platforms can lead to formatting issues. Knowing the basics of HTML is not very challenging and in little time you can learn to make and/or format a simple content page yourself. 

In this webinar, we will explore some of the online tools and resources available to you as you learn HTML, and we will practice together to make a basic webpage.
